Bloody Orange, Does It Bleed?

If you think you know all the food from all over the world, you could be wrong. Like both of us, we always find new food. Like this one fruit that is completely new to us, Bloody Orange.

We got to know this fruit from a cooking class at a kitchen appliances showroom in Kemang, South Jakarta. The fruit was there in a dish with orange and lemon. This fruit is quite eye catchy since the color is dark red but had a shape of an orange. The texture of the skin is just like any other orange.

We were so curious about what the inside looked like. We were also curious about the taste. When we asked the chef to cut the fruit, he said to wait until it needed to get cut. So, we waited for we do not know how long until the bloody orange got cut.

After being patience waiting, finally the bloody orange got cut. The inside has dark red color too like the skin, but still, the texture is just the same. I think if you squeeze the orange to get the juice, the juice will look like blood. The taste of the bloody orange is almost the same with ordinary orange. It is a bit more bitter and less acidic.

It made us wonder how come this orange has different color, red as blood. After doing some research on the internet, we finally found that the color comes from a pigment call anthocyanin that can also be found in cherries and other fruits. It was told that this pigment has health benefits since it is a great antioxidant. It can slow prevent the growth of cancer cells and even kill them.

The next question must come to our mind. Where can i get this in Jakarta? When we asked the chef, he said the fruit can be found in Hang Lekir, South Jakarta. We ourselves have not gone there to look for the fruit. But, one thing for sure, after going to many super market in the city, we have not found one. So, Hang Lekir might be the only place where you can get the bloody orange.
